1981 in an Erskinville house is where we started. We’ve been feeding bulk goods to Sydney for over 40 years.

Policies and procedures

We keep it casually professional

Hours

  1. Usually 2 hours for open and shop and 1.25 hours for close

  2. If you’d like more hours, please do so without feeling bad afterwards

  3. Shifts are either opening, shop or close

Open/incoming stock

  1. Bring in deliveries

  2. Tick off items matching with the invoice. If something isn’t right, flag it to staff

  3. Place stock in designated spot in shop then shelf

  4. Dispose of packaging - medium boxes by the front door, others in bins

Refill shop

  1. Write down what’s 3/4 empty in the shop on a clipboard on reused paper

  2. Line out what you can’t find in the back, fill what you can and tick off

  3. Recycle list in bin, or make origami

Break up large bags

  1. Setup a crate in front of a basket on the ground

  2. place the large bag on the crate

  3. place the small bag in the basket

  4. cut 10cm on the top of the large bag

  5. carefully tilt and align large bag hole with small bag

  6. control the flow

  7. when small bag is full, put on table and grab an empty one

  8. close small bags

  9. write in permanent marker name that matches the title in the shop and expiry month/year

  10. place small bag in designated shelf space

Waste

Bins - 5

  1. Compost - compostable gloves, paper towels, food, leaves

  2. Paper - paper with ink, cardboard (no wax)

  3. Soft plastics - scrunchable, bags, nets, foils, cling wrap

  4. Recycling - co-mingled hard plastics

  5. Landfill - elastic bands, dirty, very small plastic parts, ceramics

other landfill diversions

  1. Toothpaste tubes and brushes - shop front

  2. Office (future sent to officeworks) - pens, staples, highlighters, batteries

  3. Wax cardboard

  4. Large plastic tubs

End of shift

  1. Clear table for next person

  2. Clean what you used

  3. Place things back in their spot

  4. Write your shift in the volunteers logbook in the office

Customer Service

  1. Show your humble happy presence

  2. Don’t be afraid to help them yourself if you can

  3. Listen to their needs

  4. Ask staff if unsure

  5. Learn as much as you can about every little tip about the food, farmer story, benefits, taste, recipes

  6. If something isn’t in stock, ask why and write a label to explain to the customers, everyone would love to know the real reason

Dress

  1. The only thing, please wear shoes

  2. Please feel free to express yourself

  3. Wear an apron if you like

  4. We can make you a name tag too

Close

  1. Empty bins and baskets and place them back

  2. Clean surfaces

  3. Wash all dishes and scoops

  4. Lay a cloth on the bench and allow to dry

  5. Place all dirty cloths in IKEA bag by the back door

  6. Unfold boxes for recycling

  7. Tighten jar lids

  8. Sweep or vacuum front and back

  9. Wait for shop to close to mop

  10. Empty mop bucket and leave disinfectant

  11. Write shift in logbook

  12. Leave through the side door so there’s no footprints in the shop after mopping
